National Emergency Medical Services Week

May 19 – 24 has been designated as National Emergency Medical Services Week. I want to personally take this opportunity to honor and recognize all of the Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Dispatchers, Billing Staff and Management at Smith Ambulance Service and Smith Ambulance of Stark-Summit for all of the hard work and dedication you provide to the people that need us. E.M.S. week is about you. Your professionalism and skills have made a difference in the lives of many people and you can take great pride in the job you do. I know that no one is prouder of a group of people than I am of all of you.

Next month (June) will mark 40 years ago that I ran my first ambulance call. We transported a lady named Minnie Irvin from her home to Union Hospital in a 1968 Oldsmobile ambulance. Many years have passed and technology has certainly changed the way we deliver our services but I can honestly say that because of you I have the same passion about ambulance service I have always had. I have enjoyed watching many of you grow from someone curious about ambulance service to becoming a good paramedic. I have also proudly watched several of our employees advance from our company to become nurses, teachers, accountants and even a surgeon at Vanderbilt University. Your career will be what you want it to be. I encourage you to take advantage of any and all continuing education classes that are available. The ownership of your career belongs to you and those that stay in E.M.S. for a long period of time will get good at it.

I want to also assure you that during these challenging economic times we will work hard to stay strong as a company and provide you with the support you need to serve our communities. Again, please accept my sincere thanks and gratitude for your commitment to the Smith Ambulance companies and best wishes during this special week honoring you.

R.L. Smith
